Dry stone walling for beginners
Dry stone walling is a craft over 4000 years old. Whilst either driving past or walking alongside many of you will have admired the myriad of walls forming part of Britain’s heritage. Containing no mortar or cement they portray the ancient craftsmanship of many a skilled waller.
The wall pictured above follows the side of an ancient roman road presumed to link a fort at Chesterton in Stoke on Trent with Leek in the heart of the Staffordshire Moorlands from where many supplies were sent on to the main settlement at Chester.
The local farmer has asked Shire Walls in conjunction with moorland country pursuits to rebuild this wall, and you could be part of this and learn the art of dry stone walling at one of our beginners courses.
Our beginners course is suitable for all ages and teaches the basics of dry stone walling where participants will complete a small section of this wall. All equipment will be provided.
There are a choice of courses from single weekdays to single day and two day weekend courses, places are limited to ensure better instruction

This is a self catering course . We recommend you bring water for the day and a hot drink along with your lunch.
Bring warm comfortable clothes including a water proof and some sturdy foot wear. No trainers please. Gloves can be provided. If it’s hot be sure to bring along sun screen.
